It looked like a desperate situation with several of the Oakers sidelined by injury leaving the bare minimum of players available for the evening’s match. With the prospect of a tough game against the much younger Ditton Utd, hopes weren’t running high but a steady and determined attitude by the five players made the game a much closer fought battle than it could have been.
The Oakers played well, very well with Steve and Ken taking defence, Bob and Terry taking the forward positions and Steve the chef stepping in at short notice to do a great job in goal. Despite Ditton Utd having many attempts on the goal they managed to keep the opposing team to a 0-0 draw throughout the whole game, even managing a few shots at goal themselves.
Unfortunately a lucky final shot some three seconds before the end of the game gave the opposition an undeserved goal leaving the final score at 1-0 to Ditton Utd, a disappointing and bitter end to a well played game.

Thursday 23rd October 2008 (9.35pm) - Old Farts v Sherwood Oak
No review this week as the guest reviewer was unable to think of anything more to say than that the Oakers were shite.
The Old Farts were actually anything but - all very young and very good players, running rings around the older team, leaving the final score a very disappointing (but apparently not unsurprising) 9-0.
Let's hope the guys play better this week in their second cup tie - against Ditton Utd.

Thursday 16th October 2008 (8.50pm) - Ditton Utd v Sherwood Oak
The evening got off to an interesting start when the new team strips were revealed and turned out to be black and white (causing a debate on whether to change the nickname of the team to ‘The Badgers’) rather than the black and red we had been expecting. However, it was nice to see the team so smartly attired (no official team photo yet as we need to get the whole team together).
It was thrown further into turmoil when we realised that we didn't have a goalkeeper, although Nick kindly offered to step into the breach and did a fantastic job in difficult circumstances.
Ditton Utd, who are currently the top team in the league, are the youngest team the Oakers have so far played and their youth certainly helped the side to run rings around the Oakers defence in a game which seemed to last twice as long as usual.
A lucky goal one minute and forty seconds into the match saw the start of a run of bad luck for the Oakers which ended with the opposing team managing to score five goals, the final goal being a last second penalty.
However, the youngsters didn't have it all their own way. Two excellent goals were scored by Steve ‘Twinkle Toes’ Peters (taking him to the top of the goal scorers leader board) and there was some nice play overall from the rest of the Oakers, although their substitutions could have been a little better. Nick played a blinding game in goal and made some beautiful saves.
Overall this was a good game for the Oakers, even though they lost and as Ditton Utd are the next team they play in the Cup in two weeks time they should be better prepared to face the youngsters.
Final score: 5-2 to Ditton Utd.

Thursday 9th October 2008 (8.20pm) – Flair Play v Sherwood Oak
It all started very positively for the Oakers, with a run through from Twinkle Toes Peters followed by a deft pass to the left hand side of the pitch to Perry Mason who ballooned it over the bar from 4 yards...This was past the 1 legged goalkeeper...No this is not a joke, he had a thigh high leg plaster cast!!!
Perry Mason was later confused by the referee who was wearing the same colours as the Oakers.
The first half showed very dogged resistance from the boys. The first goal against us was very unfortunate in that it squirmed past the body of Colin who thus far had pulled off some great saves.
Unfortunately it all went badly downhill in the second half when the opposition scored directly from the kick off although this was much in contention as to whether the goal should stand. From there on the Sherwood Oakers became Sherwood Crumble.
There was much entertainment from Chris who had a great game of Subbuteo by pirouetting on the ball to avert the attention away from the game.
First half score 2-0 to the opposition
Final Score 6-0
In the words of Twinkle Toes Peters the outcome did not justify the effort.
The woodwork was hit 3 times...Twice by Asda Dave, once by Perry Mason...
Quote of the match was by Ken Dobson who commented to Bob Scott in the Bar after the game “You hit the post didn't you Bob?”
Bob replied “I wasn't playing Ken!”
I’m not sure what game Ken was at!!!
A big thank you to our guest reporter Di who took over the reins this week.
Next game: Thursday 16th October at 8.41pm against Ditton Utd.
No photos this week I understand. Next week should be the official unveiling of the new team kit and the photos will include the official team photo.

Thursday 2nd October 2008 (10.20pm) – Sherwood Oak v Hornets (Cup Game 1)
After last week’s less than satisfactory game the Oakers were keen to improve and after a conversation on team tactics a new approach was taken in this first Cup game of the season.
The opposition was the Hornets, a young Division One team and it seemed a good time for the Oakers to practice their new strategy.
From the start the Oakers put up a steady defence, with the new tactics working well. Unfortunately a goal was conceded towards the fourth minute. However, the team weren’t demoralised and stuck to the game plan doggedly.
A fine piece of play by Asda Dave almost saw the team draw equal, but the Hornets keeper managed to keep him out. But the new strategy worked well and the Oakers managed to keep the opponents to that single goal with an end score of 1-0 to the higher league team.
Unfortunately, a few minutes before the end of the game a scuffle ensued between a member of the Hornets and Nick, which resulted in a red card for our player, so ‘Naughty Nick’ is now at the top of our bad boy leaderboard!
